Microsoft Office Certification Helps Hull College Student Secure Dream Job

With a steadfast commitment to nurturing the skills essential for long-term career success, Hull College stands as a cornerstone of Further and Higher Education.

Renowned for its comprehensive vocational courses, apprenticeships, Higher Education, and adult learning programmes, the college was awarded a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating following a full enhanced skills inspection in October 2023 – with its Personal Development and Adult Learning Programmes judged to be ‘Outstanding’. In addition, it was also recognised for its exceptional contribution to meeting skills needs, earning the highest accolade of ‘Strong’.

At the heart of Hull College’s mission lies The Institute of Employability, a hub of support for adults across the city of Hull and Humber region. Often referred through Job Centre Plus, learners at the college are able to engage in diverse training and qualifications, particularly focusing on enhancing digital skills. These courses range from classes for absolute beginners through to Essential Digital Skills, Level 1 and all the way up to Microsoft Office Specialist.

Simon Bowman, Head of The Institute of Employability at Hull College, said: “Ensuring all adults have access to digital skills courses and qualifications and are not being left behind is one of our top priorities here at Hull College. Digital skills are more important than ever. In a world where technology is advancing at a rapid pace, digital skills are essential for individuals to remain competitive in the job market. They enable greater efficiency, productivity, and adaptability in any professional role.”

One student to enrol on the Microsoft Office Specialist programme at Hull College back in November 2023 was Daniel Winter. Daniel discovered during his job search that the roles he wanted required expertise in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Earning a Microsoft Office Specialist Certification would make him a more competitive applicant and increase his chances for getting the job he wanted. Daniel felt the course was perfect for him.

In order to excel in the Microsoft Office Specialist course, learners must develop independent learning skills and possess the required levels of self-motivation – and it was these requirements that aided Daniel’s progress on the course. He said: “The course definitely helped with these and to develop my time management skills, along with how to effectively prioritise my workload.

Shortly before completing the course, Daniel was offered an Admin Assistant role at the City Health Care Partnership, which he believes his participation on the course was a key factor. “The fact that I was able to put on my application that I was currently enrolled on the Level 2 Microsoft Office Specialist course helped me to meet the requirements to be interviewed,” he said. “The interview itself included questions about my Microsoft Office knowledge, so undertaking the qualification was a contributing factor in being offered the role.”

Daniel’s course tutor, Ted Van Hessen said: “Daniel has been an exemplary student who was fully committed to his own learning and skills development. He always demonstrated the willingness to take on any challenge and put in the work needed to succeed. Daniel’s efforts paid off as he earned Microsoft Office Specialist status, along with the respect of his peers, as classmates frequently approached him for guidance or assistance. Daniel’s hard work paid off and the Microsoft Word skills he mastered helped him land the job and career move he always wanted.”

Simon Bowman added: “Daniel’s journey highlights the transformative power of education in bridging the digital divide and empowering individuals to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. And Daniel is just one example one of many amazing success stories we have seen at the college.

Last year, we were delighted to see another of our students, Natalia Loska, represent Hull College at the UK & Ireland finals of the Microsoft Office Specialist Championships. It was a proud moment for the college and it was wonderful to see the progress and development she made whilst studying with us. Both Natalia and Daniel’s successes exemplifies the progress and development achievable through our qualifications, underscoring the impact of digital education on individual growth and opportunities.

The college are supplied with Microsoft Office Specialist learning resources and certification exams by Prodigy Learning. Andrew Lenehan, Account Manager for Hull College added: “Hearing Daniel’s story is really inspiring. I was delighted to hear that having Microsoft Office Specialist certification helped Daniel to secure the job he has wanted for so long. We often talk about the potential that MOS certification offers, so hearing directly from a student how the course has changed his life and set him on his chosen career path is fantastic.

From working with Hull College for such a long time, I know how everyone in the college lives and breathes digital skills and student success. This comes right from the very top and Hull College’s journey over the last few years has been nothing short of phenomenal. So many institutions talk about closing the digital skills gap, but Hull College move on from talking and put their words into action every single day for every single one of their learners. They really live up to their ‘Hullraisers’ nickname!”
