130 first year students from the Department of Computer Science at Edge Hill University recently completed challenging Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification as part of their Professional Practice 1 module. Over the course of an afternoon students took MOS Word Certification which entails working on live Word projects to measure their competency in this vital office productivity tool.
Shirley Hunter-Barnett, Senior Lecturer in the Computer Science Department and Module Lead commented: “The Computer Science Department at Edge Hill offers several degree pathways, within which Professional Practice is one of the core modules. Most of our students will study this in their first year with us. As employability is at the heart of our teaching, as well as enabling our students to develop specialist subject expertise, we give them the opportunity to study for external certifications. For the first time, this year, we offered our first-year students, the chance to study for a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification. We are immensely proud of their results and are hopeful this will become an annual, fundamental part of our students first year accomplishments. Thus, helping them stand out to future employers, by showing they are proficient in Microsoft Office programmes, alongside their chosen area of degree study”.
Josh Taylor, Computer Science Undergraduate successfully completed his Word 365 exam also said: “When I complete my current degree, I hope to move onto a Masters with the ultimate aim of a career in university lecturing. Having the additional Microsoft certification to my name will not only help me to achieve these aims but the additional knowledge greatly helps me on my current course to produce a better standard of work. I would recommend any student who has an opportunity to take a MOS exam to do so without hesitation”.
Andrew Lenehan, Account Manager for Edge Hill at Prodigy Learning added: “It’s been a pleasure to be involved in this project, from a small-scale pilot last year with 10 students, to being on campus today helping to support over 130 students take their certification exam has been inspiring. Hearing directly from students how having Microsoft certification on their CV benefits them is fantastic and solidifies everything we do at Prodigy Learning. Proving skills and increasing employability is the reason that Prodigy Learning exists so it’s great to hear from students themselves how much they value the opportunity of certification that Edge Hill offer and of course, it’s always a pleasure to visit this beautiful campus!“
